Smart Grid
A confluence of forces is beginning to transform the electricity landscape. Climate change, increased customer involvement and the need for energy reliability and security are driving the creation of an electricity infrastructure that is more efficient, more reliable, and integrates a diverse mix of energy resources, including renewable energy. Commonly referred to as the Smart Grid, this infrastructure is widely recognized as playing a fundamental role in addressing our energy challenges over the coming years. The Smart Grid is an advanced electrical network employing sensors, communications, automation and control systems, that enables a convergence of energy and information.
Because of its scale and complexity, evolution to the Smart Grid will require the active collaboration of utilities, technology suppliers, investors, and end users. Navigant Consulting helps clients create value from the Smart Grid by:
-
Providing an assessment of the Smart Grid landscape and how it relates to the organization's current situation
-
Creating strategies for developing, positioning and deploying Smart Grid technologies
-
Developing functional requirements and business processes to align the Smart Grid with strategic objectives
-
Assessing the functional benefits of business value of Smart Grid for key stakeholders

Navigant Consulting is currently conducting a major multi-client study on the convergence of the Smart Grid with Photovoltaics (PV). This comprehensive and focused study is helping the eighteen participating organizations identify the key technology components of a PV Smart Grid; understand how the Smart Grid could create additional value for distributed PV: gain insight to the implications for utilities; and identify the trends and valuable market opportunities. Navigant Consulting will host a meeting at SolarPower 2008 to review the key findings with study participants.
